Rotokura-Cable Bay is a special place at the top of the South Island, near Nelson. It is a narrow boulder barrier between Peppin Island and the Wakapuaka Estuary. Maori used the area for fishing and camping before European (Pakeha) settlement. It was the site of New Zealand’s first overseas cable link, to Australia, in 1876.

The estuary and the tides, the clouds and hills, ever moving and changing are a source of inspiration, and the spirit and mauri (life force) of this place are powerful. The elements of nature – earth water and air – are forceful influences. The manuka tree survives, but is constantly battling the elements.
