Rotokura-Cable Bay is a special place at the top of the South Island, near Nelson. It is a narrow boulder barrier between Peppin Island and the Wakapuaka Estuary. Maori used the area for fishing and camping before European (Pakeha) settlement. It was the site of New Zealand’s first overseas cable link, to Australia, in 1876.
The estuary and the tides, the clouds and hills, ever moving and changing areĀ a source of inspiration, and the spirit and mauri (life force) of this place are powerful.
